TIME OUT NY Gives it 4 Stars:
“★ ★ ★ ★! Whether or not you know much about D&D going in, it’s an adventuring party you won’t want to miss.”
“Like most Dungeon and Dragon – one shots, or campaigns, the story starts with our characters in a tavern receiving a mission. It’s revealed the players are in Waterdeep And a magician sends them on a mission to investigate Waterdeep and hunt down magical items. The audience chooses where the players will go in Waterdeep. They work off each other a bit, get to have lot of fun rolling dice…at one point a giant dice is brought on stage for effect. They end up going into a portal right before intermission, and when we come back out, the players are confronted with more “boss” like battles that impart conditions like: Frightened, down, toxic/fire environments etc. This is also where a little more emotion comes into the story. It still leans on comedy, but it does the narrative magic trick of getting the audience so invested into these characters by this point that when it’s time for a character to have their big third act, obstacle overcoming, moment of heroism, the entire audience enthusiastically votes for him/her to do it, and we all cheer vivaciously. This is also the point where if you want to be in a lottery to come up and play a small, scripted part for a scene, you go on the app and OPT IN. They randomly pick someone, bring them on stage, and give them a few lines to say, then they have a little moment of action. The game concludes with our heroes winning, and the DM reading off a little bit of an epilogue with some of the decisions or actions that you made, and how they affected the world of Waterdeep around you. The play was then finished. Literally everyone that I overheard was saying how much fun they had and how it was so much better than they thought it would be. I had a great time. It’s not going to be for everyone, and hopefully this write up will give you a better idea of if it is going to be something that you like. And if you are on the fence about seeing this show, it really is a must-see.”
